The Necessity of Rules in Modern Society

Author William Golding, the 1954 published novel Lord of the Flies informs the readers an enormous amount of realistic questions and reflects its shadows in many corners of our life. This essay will explain and evaluate the rules and conventions with evidence both in the novel and modern society in response to the topic that the society without rules will be orderless and risky.

In Chapter Four, titled Painted Face and Long Hair, the author establishes a severe conflict between the ruler and the hunter, whose name is Ralph and Jack. Ralph became the leader of the children on the island by succeeding in the election (Golding, 21). He made numerous attempts to make everyone on a good track. Moreover, he arranged the hunter group, the builder group and ect. However, only a few children would like to listen to him because of his seriousness. They would like to play instead of everything. Thus, every child became a rule breaker. Seemingly, the children’s action doesn’t influence their development: they have food to eat, a group to rely on, and friends to encounter the suffering. Nevertheless, everything changed immediately when Ralph noticed the ship at the horizon (Golding, 91). The Indication of modern civilization came to exist, the ship may become their hope to be rescued and survived! Just when they were feeling hopeful, the ship went away, without any glance to the boys because two boys who were controlling the signal fire derelict their duty and didn’t follow the rules (Golding, 96). Therefore, it caused the irritation between Ralph and Jack (Golding, 98). Soon, the conflict kept increasing, Jack hurt Piggy and broke his glasses without an apology. The worse thing is that they lost their connections and opportunity to be rescued. Consequently, based on these evidence and plot previously, the facts infer that the society without a rule will lead to irregular, orderless, and eventually cause the severe dispute.

As a short transition into the real world issues and explanation, Ralph and Jack remind the readers the importance of rules. Rules just like the baskets that are used in placing different vegetables, they are made for keeping the balance between people and events: overview the entire plot so far, all the mistakes are caused by the disobedience of rules. For instance, the children didn’t work with Ralph for their small cabin or shelter to spend the night;, instead, they are all eating fruits in the forest. As a result, they were struggling with their nightmare and fear at night (Golding, Chapter 3). Rule breakers are everywhere in our society. The same situation could also occur in our realistic world as well.

There have been numerous accidents recently just because of these rule breakers. One of the significant examples is the severe traffic accident that occurred in the district Wanzhou in the ruling range of Chongqing city, a government direct-jurisdiction cosmopolitan located in southwest China. Loop-routine Bus number 22 fell into the Chang jiang river on the Second Bridge, reported by Xinhua News Agency in October 2018. The bus crossed the middle line and had a collision with an automobile from the opposite side of the road. Then, the bus broke the fence of the bridge and fell into the river directly. Afterwards, the collision caused a large amount of casualties and 15 deaths. There are still 2 people in the status of “Uncertain.”. The overall reason is the disobedience of rules that a woman has an argument with the driver without a clear reason. Her carelessness made her miss the place she would get off, she slapped the driver because she was disappointed and turned the driver’s steering wheel. According to the Law of Transportation in China, disturbing a bus driver for no significant reason will be classified as a severe crime (CNCA, 2). Therefore, it is obvious to notice that a society without rules could be risky and has the potential hazard on the safety of human beings.

Overall, from the evidence provided above, without rules, Ralph and his group lost an opportunity to be rescued, without rules, the traffic accident could be even serious. The entire society could be irregular and harmful if there are no rules to limit the balance between human behaviour and events. We need rules and regulations to follow in order to make everything in our life regular, safe, reliable and keeping the a right track.
